Boot of your Windows XP CD, when prompted, select option "R" "To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R"

Select the Windows installation you would like to log onto, usually press 1 and enter.

On Windows XP Pro you will be prompted for your Administrator password. On Windows XP Home you will have instant hard drive access.

First you should create a Backup Folder and copy the files to be replaced into the folder before overwriting the corrupted files.

Command: md C:\Windows\Backup copy C:\windows\system32\config\system C:\Windows\Backup\system.bak

Now you need to delete the corrupted file.

Command: delete C:\windows\system32\config\system

And copy previous backup back into C:\windows\system32

Command: copy C:\windows\repair\system C:\windows\system32\config\system

Now reboot your computer, type

Command: exit

at the command prompt.
